Hurricanes Katrina and Rita devastated an area comparable in size to the United Kingdom and had a dramatic effect on the clinical and educational mission of the Louisiana   State   University   Health   Sciences   Center , New Orleans (LSUHSC-NO). Other institutions can benefit from the lessons learnt from this event, which are applicable to any emergency for which preparedness and rapid response are critical to restoring and rebuilding programmes in academic medicine.
