Let us not mourn the passing of long cases

During a recent Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) awareness session with clinical teaching colleagues I was discussing one of the main reasons for choosing the OSCE format; its inherent fairness presenting the same challenge to all.  I discussed standardised examiner conduct and related the story of a now reitred eminent doctor who had run foul of the then professor of obstetrics and gynaecology.  Despite being the top female student of her year, she was failed in clinical obstetrics.  She remains bitter.
